more hats

A photo shoot with my boys, without a plan, is not a good thing. I quickly asked them to put on their hats so we could take a quick photo. "Awww, mom. How long is this going to take? Do we have to wear coats?" I thought about it for a quick second and thought maybe they would cooperate better cold. I promised them hot chocolate when we came in. They put on shoes that weren't theirs, and out we went. If only you could have heard the voice behind the camera. It went something like this: "Come on guys, this isn't funny. Andrew, put Charlie down. Charlie get down, you are going to hurt Andrew's back. Really guys, stop it. You guys are in big trouble. Do you want hot chocolate when we go in? PUT HIM DOWN. Hey, COME BACK HERE!"
Do you think they heard a word of what I said? Nope, not one.
Anyhow. After the boys saw Libby's hat, they each asked for one. Andrew asked for an orange one,(I only aim to please) and Charlie asked for one with a pattern. Great, Kirsten designed one like that too.
They love them. And like Jane's child, Andrew has told me that all of his friends love it, and want one. Hmmm, I don't think I will knit them all one. However, I would make one for his friend, who is celebrating his birthday.
Yarn: Mauch Chunky. I do not recommend doing the stranded hat out of this yarn. The yarn turned into threads, basically falling apart in my hands.
Needles: size 10 double point.
And yes, I made them hot chocolate.

Oh, that's too bad you don't recommend the that yarn because it looks fabulous! I was just thinking I need to make one!

Oh, and I suppose that's where the saying, "Boys will be boys" comes from! Too cute.

Hee Hee...sounds JUST like my house! Glad they love them. They look great! We had a huge meltdown yesterday because my oldest thought he had LOST his...horrors! But like any typical middle schooler, he found it at the bottom of his backpack, not before he blamed myself and everyone else around him. Whew :)

The hats look great! Love the color picks! I actually printed that pattern out when you first did it for Libby - I want to make a few for my nephews.

How come you got so much snow there and we have none???

I am still getting used to "boy behavior!" I think the hats look great, but I think it's fantastic that the boys love their hats!

Those crazy kiddos...what can you do? It ended up being a great photo shoot though, action shoot!

Gorgeous hats and photos. I like your thinking, take away basic necessities, like warmth, and children are more likely to cooperate!

Oh, we're always the family in the back yard, screaming at our kids to stand still so we can take pictures... It doesn't work for us, either. Your hats look great, though!

Aww, these are lovely photos - espcially the first one - it's really the best pose for modelling a hat! Unfortunately for me, I don't think I'm physically fit enough to engineer a similar pose like that for my hat FOs. Hehee, I throroughly enjoyed the bit about the voice behind the camera - sounds very familiar, especially the part that goes - do you think they heard a word of what I said? Too funny! And you (or is it your boys?) really have such interesting ways to post about FOs :) Totally made my morning! Thanks for sharing the fun!

I just bought a hat like these for myself...since I can't knit to save my life. Once again, great photos, Les.

Oh, glad to hear that others go through that same sibling stuff that I do (except that mine are a boy and a girl)!!!

Your hats are fabulous---you aim to please all right.

I have a Thorp on the needles right now but I'm wondering if it's going to be too scratchy (Rowan Yorkshire Tweed chunky---a bit rough)... We'll see. It was the only yarn I had on hand. I do love the colors of the yarn you used for yours...

They look fantastic - the boys and the hats!!! Makes me wish I had one of my own - boy that is, the hat would be way too hot!

Tanya said...

Great post, Leslie. You crack me up - I can just hear the banter! Too funny, boys. LOVE the hats!!!

I got the Hot Chocolate Pot for Christmas ~ you talking about hot chocolate makes me thinks I need to christen it today!

As my children get more & more ahem *adventurous* I find myself resorting to all those tired phrases myself...gems like "no means no!" and "you have to do what mommy says!" (obviously they don't have to...or they would have, huh!).

The hats look great, though! lol

Love the action shots! I think the hats are really nice despite you aren't feelin' the yarn.

BTW, I nominated you on my blog for my daily read. :-)

I wish I could understand English patterns, that's the problem with the language not being the mother tongue - those hats look lovely.

Am I the only one who got the joke of making a Thorpe hat from Mauch Chunky yarn?

Very clever!
