the button game

Choosing buttons can be a tricky game. Leather buttons can be too heavy. Thrifted buttons can only come in singles or pairs. (Not good when you need three.) Grandmothers buttons can be the perfect vintage button but not the right size. And when you are bound and determined to use what you have... this takes time.
I'm now tempted to check closets.

How about trying 3 completely different buttons that don't match each other. Sometimes that can look really funky and it will definitely be an original. Hope you manage to find the right ones to suit :0)

Yes...TOTALLY understand I did that last night. BUT couldn't find ones that I liked SO I had to go to the store to pick up the buttons...I'm sure whatever you pick will be GREAT!

When you find the right ones you will feel it. :)

I go through the same challenge with my button collection and often resort to buying new - never enough of the right ones in the tin!

Buttons are tricky! It doesn't seem to matter how many I have; I never have just the right ones for whatever project I'm trying to finish!

I know the feeling:)
I often resort to using different colours as "J" says.
Though it depends of the look you have ofcourse:)

I use fabric covered buttons for all my button needs now! They are light and I can custom them for every project. The best!

Regardless of whether you find what you're looking for, the hunt for buttons is always fun.

I can really relate to this. I finally gave in and went out and bought buttons this morning. I still can't believe that I couldn't find what I needed in my vast button collection. I hope you have better luck than I did.

Ha! I am wearing a crochet bracelet a friend gave me for my birthday last year... with two lovely buttons she cut off a shirt in her closet. She figured she never buttoned the top buttons anyway, so why not put them to good use?

if you're totally wanting to use what you have don't forget buttons can be covered in fabric... and you've got lots of that.

That picture is just full of eye candy. Good luck, Sherlock.

Or you can call on your button-hoarding friends. You know the ones who throw away nearly everything BUT buttons...

Finding the right buttons can make all the difference in the world! Are these, per chance, for your newly completed sweater? Can hardly wait to see what you choose. Good luck!

elizabeth said...

You may laugh, but I've bought items from the thrift store just for the buttons!

Good luck, can't wait to see the modeled shots! I just bought that pattern booklet today.

You can never find the right buttons when you need them, but the cutest darn ones will easily appear when you don't have any use for them at the time! Can't wait to see what you decide on. Keep looking....

lol.... I am imagining you snipping buttons of things in your wardrobe.... too funny :)

We have a different kind of button game here.... kinda raid mama's button jar and throw em all around the house and for good measure lets hide some in our mouths!!

I hope your button search finishes well! I have a box of buttons, but I'll admit that I forget I have buttons when I decide to sew a button on a pair of pants. It's always go and find a new button.

I obviously have not had my button box long.

Buttons are my weakness--such a challenge and then, at least with me, when I find the **right** one I can't bear to use it!

I love to go to my local JoAnnes for buttons, they have the greatest selection around here. was looking for buttons for a baby sweater a few weeks ago, and found the most awesome Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit buttons! Treat yourself to some drop dead gorgeous buttons for your project!

Oh, you are such a lucky woman to have such a button supply on hand! Whew! The search must be so much fun. I can't wait to see whatever it is that's destined to bear these three elusive buttons.

JacquiMcR said...

Had to laugh. I probably shouldnt admit to cutting the buttons off a cardigan hanging in the wardrobe to finish a project(I ended up recycing the cardigan as well, but thats not the point is it!) Where buttons are concerned, none are safe!. Hope you find the right ones - jacqui x

I'm confident the buttons are matched (or if not perfectly unmatched) and already on your beautiful sweater! this was me a few weeks ago searching for buttons to finish the fls. I found the perfect wooden buttons in mark's grandmother's button tin! it was a blessing to me!

When I went to La Drougerie in Paris I was planning on splurging on some ridiculously expensive yarn and pattern books but when I got there I was drawn the the buttons. They have some amazing buttons. I was working with a limited budget but I only got 100 grams of yarn so I could get as many buttons as possible! And one knitting pattern book. It was heaven. I totally understand.

Renee said...

...ooooh, I love seeing people's button jar collections.

Have fun on the button hunt, it's one of my favourite parts of knitting... a much fun as chosing the project pattern and yarn.

Ah, don't worry about the above commenter, Leslie. You're just fine! You're doing things you love - Anonymous thinks it's entertaining to make mean little threatening comments randomly. That's just a symptom of a miserable existence in the first place. Let it go.x
