heron

Wow. I had no idea that my last post would elicit such a response. I am overwhelmed with your kind, sweet, thoughtful words! I knew how much you all "get" life. I also know, that you all know, that my life is not "perfect". Nobody's life is. However, everyone has a slice of perfect in every. single. day. It's all about finding the simple pleasure in the simple moments.
All right, enough of that. So, about those buttons. :)
Well, I had so many great suggestions. From mis-matchy, to fabric covered, to buttons covered with yarn. (Thanks, Mary!) I started to look for 3 different buttons, but didn't have the right size. I thought about covering buttons with yarn, but my yarn was too chunky. And then I thought, heck, I'll never button the darn thing, just use those boring brown buttons. So, Tuesday night I sewed on three brown buttons.
Then I decided that I actually DO like it buttoned. Hmm. The pattern calls for you to fold the collar over and fasten it underneath the other side. I omitted that.
Before I blocked it, I thought, wow. I just made myself a tutu. Seriously! It was sticking straight out, just like a tutu. But after blocking it settled down a bit and drapes nicely. Oh! And about that blocking. The yarn was absolutely one of the worst wet yarn smells EVER. It seriously stunk up our whole family room. However, once dried, the smell completely dissipated.
Oh, hi!
Yarn: Berroco Peruvia Quick, 9 hanks, color 9123
Size: 36"
Needles: US size 10 and 11
Mods: Just omitting the fold over collar part.
Final word. I LOVE so much about this sweater. How fun and fast it was to knit. From start to finish it was two weeks. And, I promise that I do not sit aaalllll day and knit. I love that this will be worn (a lot) as my coat. I love the sleeves. I love the drape, and how the back scoops down and covers your bum. I think if you really like it but don't like how full the peplum is, that would be easy to remedy. Less increases would make that less full.

Again, thank you. YOU all are THE BEST!

Hi Leslie,

You're sweater is FABULOUS!!! I'm incredibly envious on how wonderful yor projects are and how wonderful you look in every single thing you knot (or at least share). I just finished my first vest and was sad when i tried it on it realized....hmmmm, way too small.

The best part..you showed you too in the photo. Nice to see you share a little piece of yourself with us.

Seriously comtemplating adding this one to my to do list. So often, a sweater like this is all we need here in the south. I have lots of grannies to finish first.

Ahhh, that's a great style, and beautifully knitted. Your button decision was good.

Your warning about the scent of this wool when wet was very, very kind. Just what one would expect from a Friend!

very, very nice! i wanted to make it so bad...size 10 needle sound like a dream especially with a newborn in the house but i was nervous about the peplum. i think i may give it a go. so many great patterns in that booklet.

Your sweater is gorgeous! And as always, it fits you so gosh darn well! I have that wool in a maroon/plum color - got it on a huge discount - and now i'm seriously considering knitting this sweater.

Monica said...

Sigh...if there's one silver lining to the "ugly comment incident" it's that you put a head on your usually headless shots! And a very pretty one, at that. And one that's FULL OF LIFE!! Pretty sweater, too.

So glad something that "stank" during the process really turned out well in the end. I've felted a number of bags in my day, and the wet sheep smell is just not something you can tone down easily.

Jolie said...

love love love that Heron! (trying to imagine what it would look like on my rather rounder silhouette! lol)

And I just saw your post yesterday. Silly twat...they're clearly just insanely jealous of your button collection, don't know how to bake and can only macrame. You're lovely, as is your blog - don't let it get you down!

J said...

I love your Heron, it really suits you.
Anything that covers my derrière gets a big thumbs up from me. I'll have to give it a go myself now, though it'll definitely take me alittle longer than two weeks.

I LOVE your Heron. It looks wonderful on you. And about those "boring buttons".....they work perfectly. The sweater has such a strong design element you really don't need anything other than "boring buttons"

As always, you have a way of making the sweater look better than the original/model does. I thought FOR SURE, there would be no way I'd be doing my usual following Leslie down the path on this one. But man, that is too fabulous to pass up. So here I go.

Oh, and by the way, cute head!

Fabulous! I just bought this pattern booklet and love the design but would probably make it less poofy at the bottom. I think it'd be really nice in a wool/alpaca blend.

Very cool. I'm still not sold on the top, partially because I have a feeling that my butt is big. I know it is all in my head, but it makes it hard to pick a project that will accentuate it!

stitching under oaks said...

I knew this would happen...I wasn't real keen on the pattern from the picture that berroco had on its website...I'd have never chosen that sweater to knit for myself....but then you knit it up and I love it. These designers would be so smart to pay you to knit up their patterns for them....you'd sell them way more than they could sell themselves. You have a wonderful way of taking something and making it yours and making it wonderful. great job girl!

When I saw that pattern on the Berroco site, I skipped past it - now I'm re-thinking it.
I don't know if it's the way you blocked it, or if you made modifications - but whatever you did, I think your version and your photos are much more enticing and flattering than the photo on the site. Send a shot to Berroco - you could be the next cover grrl!!
Great job and you look amazing in it.

I love this sweater...no need to beat the dead horse, but I also get similar comments(or hints) in real life. Ms Get a Life takes herself or himself too seriously. I have a very stressful job, so I should bang my head against the wall because I couldn't close a deal at work, my emotional life sucks because I miss my Mom like a little girl whom I lost last year, I have twins and I am constantly tired, and I keep getting yeast infection down there... I am sure those would make a great blog.. but while all these happen I gracefully knit every night while I watch my family, as if all is perfect. I try to make a perfect knot each time... and as I obsess about that, I relax and enjoy what I created... others can keep taking life too seriously and not understanding what makes us happy. I don't even know why they bother to come to your blog. For those people there is always the reuters news and cnn. I love your projects and you inspire me...
