Before I left for spring break, I finished the body of the foldover cowl pullover. Anxious to see what it looked like, I tried it on and was instantly disappointed.
It may be hard to see from this photo, but it is a bit big. Big in a boxy sort of way. I wore it around the house like this and the look grew on me. I was thinking that perhaps I liked it. Perhaps I liked it big and boxy. Perhaps I needed a big and boxy sweater. I decided to pack it in my suitcase and ask my mother for her advice.

Fast forward to the last evening of our trip. My mother made herself a cocktail, grabbed a beer for me and told me we were heading to the beach. "Bring your sweater", she said. "Your going to rip it out."
And so that is what I did. My mother was right. (Again.) That sweater is meant to be on the fitted side. I'll be much happier in the end. And with my mother by my side, a beer in my hand, sitting on the beach, it took the sting out of it a little. (A whole lot.)
Have a terrific weekend!

  2. I ripped a few things out today myself, although none were at the finished stage. I'm sure you'll make something beautiful out of that yarn yet!

  3. Wow! Your mom is awesome! If you've got to rip a sweater, that's a great way to do it.

  5. I just started following you and am a fairly new knitter (can count my projects on one hand). I just finished my first sock..it is big and slouchy. I might just get a vodka and orange juice and sit outside in the sun for a bit of ripping myself :) Excellent celebration while so much effort disappears back into a ball.

you are very confident to tear it out but your mother was probably right.

  7. Mother knows best.
I hope that means you'll give it a try again.
Sometimes ripping things back is good therapy for knitters.

  8. You know what? The way you tell us that story, it is so funny! Even though we know that it is so sad to rip a project after working on it so hard...

  9. Owwwweee. Oh well. It's like pulling off a band-aid. Once you rip it, it's gone.

    Onward and upward!

  12. That's all part of this wonderful hobby, it's one that gives us a chance for a "do over".... rip away...

  13. I agree that the boxy and t-shirt look was great, a bit of light felting and voila....and LOL at 'do-over'. I like to 'do-over' just not on the same project :-) Good on you for being brave and what a perfect setting for frogging!

  16. Oh Leslie, you actually make ripping sound like fun when you put it like that. I love the thought of a straight talking, cocktail drinking mother.

  17. yeah, I wish my mum would sometimes be as straight with me as that. I think the boxy look looked ok, when I'm thin it makes me feel thinner, doesn't work if I'm carrying any weight though. You can pull it off.

  20. OMG! Your mom sounds like a fabulous woman. Honest opinion, but in the best way possible. Not like my mom (or "Crush" as we call her). And, of course, she was right!

  21. Yeah, I know, ripping something out is really hard, but it's better than never wearing the garnment that you made. That used to happen to me :(. Good luck with the new knit!

  24. Yay for mom! Because who needs big and boxy? Though nothing looks big and boxy on you, of course! It's such a pretty color, too - you're gonna love it in th end!

  25. Good story. Sweet mom with sage viewpoint. But I have to say before I got to the ripping out part...I was planning on sending you my address and postage. I think it would have fit. HA!

  26. sometimes you just have to frog. it happens to us all, but I'm so jealous that you had the beach, your mom, and some drinks to ease the pain!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Good for you to be so brave! I just ripped out 8000 stitches, but that is nothing and I still felt the pain of doing so. I love what the sweater promises to look like (in that color, on that pattern) when you do finish.

  33. which helped take the sting out more? mom or the beer? haha! moms know best...and you are too pretty to hide in something so big- if you want boxy wear a fleece or sweatshirt! if you work hard and knit something it should be wonderful!

  34. I just LOVE the relationship that you have with your Mom!! My own sweet Mama passed away when I was in college and whenever I hear about someone who has a special relationship with their mom it just absolutely warms my heart. ♥

  48. You know what they say...a bad day at the beach is better than the best day at work. We don't believe that in our house, any day at the beach is great. I have ripped the project I am working on now 4 times. The first time I ripped it I was three rows from finished. I like to think this saves me money and I ALWAYS learn something. Can't wait to see it done, everything you knit is beautiful.

  49. Those mothers...they really do know best, don't they?! And if you had to rip, that sounds like the way to do it.
