two at a time

It's usually not my thing. Knitting both sleeves at the same time.
But, my mother does it and she has repeatedly mentioned how great it is. They are always exactly the same, and there is something so rewarding about when you are finished, you are completely finished. Okay then, I'll give it a try, again. So, away I knit. Bound both off. Wow, that does feel great. Then, I held one up to my arm.... about 10 inches too long. I kid you not. Both sleeves are about 10 inches too long. (Distractions galore around here.) Now, that is a reason to NOT knit both sleeves at the same time.
My yarn arrived for this sweater. Oh, how lovely. I am resisting the urge to cast on until I finish my slouchy cardigan. Cause just like the sleeves, I am good with just one at a time.

Have a wonderful weekend.

  1. Something possessed me to attempt my first mittens two-at-a-time. Twice as many mistakes, twice as much ripping out. I definitely think it's a worthwhile method, but only for something foolproof!

I'm doing both sides of the front of the slouchy cardigan at the same time. While I don't love it, I think I like it better than counting rows. I HATE counting rows.

  3. Ouch! I think I would rather count my rows and match them up. I'm going to curse myself now and say I don't tend to get that distracted when I knit.

  11. Um.... 10 extra inches?! That kind of distraction can only be had watching Real Housewives of NJ. C'mon - you can admit it - I won't tell.

  12. I've done that before, knit 2 sleeves at the same time and made a mistake and the pain of re-doing was doubled too !! :) :)

  13. Sorry to read about your extra long sleeves, but ... I still think it's wise to knit both sleeves at the same time ... they get the dame tension, and really do match, no matter how long those sleeves might be.

That new yarn does look tempting.

    Best wishes!

OH NO!!! (giggle) On the other hand, I was knitting my daughter a shrug and had to lay it aside to complete something else. When I went back to it, I was totally bummed because I had modified the one sleeve I had knitted and didn't write it down! UGH! I tossed it back in the bag where it has set for 4 months now. So I can see the advantage of both ways. Didn't carrying around 2 balls of yarn and keeping all that straight get a little annoying too?~Jan

  18. Too funny. I mean the way you described it, not the actual situation.
I've been tempted to do the two at once method, but then chickened out.
I've knitted mittens with the Alpaca and its a joy to work with.

My mom knits like yours - for instance, sleeves at once... and she said the same! Beside the chances of making mistakes on counting rows etc dicreases tremendously!

  26. I normally knit my sleeves two at a time when they are plain knitting. Can't believe you were 10 inches worth of distracted, that's an awful lot of sitting in one place at a time!!! My kids definitely don't allow for that :-)

Like the look of the next cardy it will look wonderful in the orange.

  27. Oooh ... :(
I was thinking about knitting my next sleeves both at the same time - I am afraid it won't happen. It is better to keep just one at-a-time.

    Thanks for sharing your experience.

  28. I knit mine at the same time, too. :) But I haven't had the too short/too long result, so maybe I just haven't knit enough sweaters yet?

  29. Chuckled over your long, long sleeves. I pictured Frankenstein dragging his knuckles. LOL. I love the color of the sweater. I really like the sweater you will be making with the Baby Alpaca Grande Tweed (one of my favorite yarns!) Does that pattern have a name? Where can I purchase that pattern?
