I bet you've heard the buzz around blogland as the blog tour of Sweet Shawlettes has been going on for a few weeks. It's Jean Moss's latest book which includes 25 irresistible patterns. Jean has included patterns for all levels and all interests. Lace, colorwork, texture and cables.

The book is broken down into four different categories... country, couture, folk and vintage. I like the little explanation and brief story at the beginning of each. A little peak into how the pieces came about.

Couture:

I really love this two-piece shawl made out of gossamer kidsilk. The drape looks dreamy to me.

Folk:

Ceilidh shawlette and Polperro Cape caught my eye immediately.

I really like the tweedy look of the ceilidh and rowan denim (used for polperro) is an all time favorite yarn of mine. (Love the buckle!)

Vintage:
Mantilla shawlette. Oh, do I love this. Knit in the round out of rowan kidsilk haze. Light enough to be worn several ways.

I am knitting, I promise. However, this hat has put me in a bit of a funk. The yarn is yummy but wearing thin cause row 15 has been knit and reknit a few too many times. Oy. I finally got smart and put markers in between every 24 st pattern repeat. Hoping that will help out my brain.
Charlie reminded me that I used to make a lot more cookies.

Okay then.

Lemon Sugar cookies were made last week and this.
Big, chewy and full of flavor.

We highly recommend them.

Now back to my hat.

Toast...

Could it actually be that easy? After making mittens, gloves, fingerless mitts could Toast be just too, too simple?

I noticed that while walking trails in the fall, and strolls on the beach in the cooler blustery days that I usually tugged my shirt sleeves over my hands or stuffed in in my pockets. I wasn't ready to get out my winter gloves yet. I decided that this looked like a job for Toast. At home I scrounged through my knitting stash and found some of my favorite wooly heavier yarn. I love wooly yarn. I am definitely happy that wooly yarn likes me.

I whipped up my Toast and used it on my next outdoor walk. It was great! If my hands felt chilled the toast covered them. If I was getting too warm I pushed Toast up so my hands got more air. I found Toast to be much more practical for me. If I wore Toast while on errands, I didn't have to take them off. I just pushed them up again so that my hands were free.

This winter I think I will use Toast over my dress leather gloves.

Okay, one day I did manage to lose some Toast. One fell out of my coat pocket at a restaurant. ::sigh:: I simply went home and made more Toast. That didn't take long. I am a little giddy thinking of the day when all I have is mismatched Toast. The creative ideas are limitless for color!

I have found Toast is warmer than the fingerless mitts that I have had in the past. by pulling further down over my hand it covers my thumb better and holds in more heat. I am so glad you gave us Toast. I never would have tried it if I hadn't found it on your site. Thank you!

Well, well. December 21.

I've thought about getting over to this space all month.

I have also thought about knitting.

And, about your knitting. And, how busy a lot of YOU are knitting!

L O V E that!

I, on the other hand, have knit about 2 rows in the last several weeks. I know, I know. Shocking. I have a pretty good reason.

The chalkboard place mats were included in Real Simple's 50 gifts under $50 and I have been beautifully swamped. I feel extremely humbled and blessed.

I don't take for granted all of you. My entire reason I started that little business in the first place. You gave me the motivation and the inspiration. Truly, I couldn't be more grateful.

(This double rainbow showed up today. It was a lovely gift.)

I plan on getting my knitting back on. Very, very soon. I dream of all of it. Sweaters, shawls, hats, mittens and socks.

Real.

Simple.

Happiness.

My wish to you is the same. Real, Simple happiness...

Goodness gracious. Where did that month go?
Thanksgiving was spent in Florida. There really is so much to be thankful for.

A photo was taken to let you know how thankful I am. I can't believe I'm just now getting here to let you know. I love this community we are all a part of. I feel very blessed to be a part of it.

So, tomorrow's a big day. The countdown begins.

I love these books so, so much. 60 patterns. All made with the same yarn. How much better can it get.
Just in time for gift giving.

I almost slapped a post-it note on each and every page. That's how much I loved each and every pattern.
Scarves. Cable, lace, color work. I really love that one up there... knit in a tube. (There is a beautiful fair isle tube scarf, too.) I wish I would have taken a photo of the double knit checkerboard scarf and the basketweave pocket scarf. (SO many beautiful scarves.)

And those wave-cuff mittens up there... L O V E. The lacy cuff is knit separately and attached later. And then, buttoned closed! (You know how I love to pick out the perfect button.)
The colorblock cap. This one totally caught my eye. It is worked section by section with short rows and pieced together. The rib band added last.

Who doesn't love an ear flap hat for those super cold days. Love the colors they chose for this one.
The convertible mitten-gloves. I've made fingerless mittens... but never gloves. Would love to give it a try. And those stripes are just too cute.

Bobbled gauntlets? Yes, please. Adore those!

It took me a while to put this sweater together. It also took me a while to get photos. I can only blame that on daylight savings time and the color. The color of the yarn.
While I love everything about this sweater, I have one regret that I didn't make it in the natural color. Something about those cables... look so good in natural.

Pattern: Aidez

Yarn: Berroco peruvia quick, 9 hanks 9165 indigo.

Needles: 10.5 US

Size: Small

I do love it. It is a pretty quick knit resulting in a sweater that can be thrown on just about all of the time. I really like the long lines and drape. Soooo many people have made this telling you the balance of this project totally works. Easy yet challenging. Chunky yarn that makes it quick yet requires a bit of brain power to slow you down.

Oh boy.

Is it really November 7th!

Halloween came and went. (That seems like that was a month ago.)

A little girl turned 14. (I can't believe it. Stop the insanity.)

And these snicker-doodle brownies became a new favorite. (Thanks to my friend, Amy, for sharing the recipe.)

You should really go and get your 2 sticks of butter out of the refrigerator to soften. Now. (You will only need 3/4 cup.)
You won't be sorry.
Only sorry you will have to make them again. And again.
We couldn't even wait for them to cool before we iced.

Snicker-doodle Brownies:

2 1/3 cups flour :: 1 1/4 tsp baking powder :: 1/2 tsp salt :: 3/4 cup butter, softened :: 1/ 1/4 cups granulated sugar :: 1/2 cup packed brown sugar :: 3 eggs :: 1 tsp vanilla

Cinnamon Mixer:

1 Tablespoon sugar :: 1 Tablespoon cinnamon

Icing:

1 cup powdered sugar :: 2 Tablespoons milk :: 1/4 tsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 350˚. Butter bottom of a 9 x 13 baking pan. Mix together butter and sugars until blended. Add eggs, one at a time. Add vanilla. Mix in the dry ingredients.

Spoon half of the batter into the pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle cinnamon mixer on top. Using the remaining batter, place teaspoon sized dollops on top of the cinnamon mixture covering all the pan. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool for one hour (yeah right). Drizzle icing on top.

I feel, it is extremely important to choose a pattern within your skill level so you don't get frustrated. I wish all patterns had this detail. Pumpkin patch leg warmers. Made out of Malibrigo Sock. Skill level, easy. I love the ruched look here.
Autumnal vest. Made out of Malibrigo Rasta. Skill level intermediate. I really dig this vest. Plus, chunky yarn = instant gratification.
The foliage hat. Made out of Malabrigo Lace. Skill level, Intermediate. I love this cable and colorwork hat with the tree motif. Nichole really knows her hats. (And looks super cute in them!) Remember, Nichole is the one who designed piece of pi. You can make a few hats from the yarn you need for one, just like you can with the piece of pi.
Gathering Mitts. Made out of malabrigo worsted and rios. Skill level, intermediate. These mitts have an outer lace mitt and an inner felted mitt! I really do.
The way the tape measure fell next to my desk. (I swear to absolute goodness. It made me gasp.)
Under the coffee maker. (I know, right!?)
And then, there. In the sugar, on the snickerdoodle pie.
Could it be any cuter?!

This morning, a big glob of jelly landed on the counter. You guested it... shaped like a heart.

Not sure exactly what it all means. Maybe I should have been a heart doctor?
I don't love the ingredients in this one. However, Charlie asked for the original snickerdoodles. Not just "cinnamon" cookies. I must say, they are pretty darn good. I didn't feel like rolling them into balls, therefore, decided to press it into the pan.

Snicker doodle cookies:

1 cup crisco (not my favorite ingredient) :: 1 1/2 cup sugar :: 2 eggs :: 1/2 tsp vanilla :: 2 3/4 cup flour :: 2 tsp cream of tarter :: 1 tsp baking soda :: 1/2 tsp salt.

-Cream crisco, sugar and eggs, add vanilla and then dry ingredients. Spread in 8" round pan. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar mixture. (1 tbls sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon)

Bake at 350˚ for 15-20 minutes.

My friend, Amy, shared a snickerdoodle brownie recipe. Those are up next. I'll let you know how those turn out.

Hi! My name is Marguax from the blog tentenknits. Leslie was kind enough to have me guest blog and for that I couldn't be more grateful.

We both have a passion for knitting. For most people they may do it once the weather gets cooler or maybe when a gift is needed. For me it is a year round obsession. Bamboo and cotton for summer, a wool blend for fall and alpaca for winter. I am a knitter obsessed. I knit so often these days that I can't imagine what it would be like to lose control of my hands and not be able to do the craft I love so much. Sadly it is something I can't say could never happen.

Let me tell you about Nick. Nick is the father on one of my closest friends, Torry. We met my freshman year at Boston College and I immediately gained an irreplaceable friend and new family. Nick and his wife Debbie quickly became foster parents to myself and my roommates. Her and Nick's generosity to us during those years was incalculable.

I guess it's no surprise years later it is their names that were on all of our wedding guest lists. No list was complete without Debbie and Nick.

Recently, Nick was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. If you've read the book Tuesdays with Morrie then I am sure you know exactly what that means. Already ALS has caused him to require hlp doing things we take for granted everyday - eating and breathing.
One of my most popular patterns is the 5th Avenue Infinity Scarf. I had been thinking of making a chunkier cowl version and only until recently did I find my reason to get it done. {This is the moment I noticed the white picnic table in our backyard. Under the trees. Half in the pachysandra, half in the grass. It is rotting with chipping paint and should be taken to the dump. I can't bare the thought. And today, it looked amazing decorated with the fallen leaves. I'm pretty sure I'll keep it around for another year. If it can weather another winter.}

They are what my boys are currently obsessed with.

I have to say it a few times, because at thirteen, Lily is one of the most amazing, accomplished knit designers (and knitters!) I know. Her talent and inspiration blow me away. I can only imagine where this ever beautiful path in life takes her.

i just can't stop

My parents came to town. They are a tremendous amount of help when they are here. I feel very fortunate.
My mother had a bit of an intervention and told me we HAD to purge the house.
I don't need all those baby spoons? Really? I can't keep all 6 platters? Really? I don't need her old set of china, those extra glasses, those silk flowers, those candle sticks, those extra bowls, 50 cookie cutters, a tea server? Really?

It took some time and felt really amazing. The house feels light and I don't know if I have ever felt this organized. I absolutely need someone to reason with that voice in my head that tells me I should hold onto something. My mother was just the person.

I continue to pick up things and question it's need and use.

The "stuff" has been blessings to me and will hopefully bless someone who needs it. We had the VVA pick it up out of the driveway. (Gotta love that.)
I didn't knit much, however, my mother sure loved the socks she finished. Extra special because we got the yarn in Greece. (I got some, too. Time to cast on.)

granola bars

For those of you that have been here awhile, you know I love to bake. And during the school year we do a "cookie of the week". In the beginning I had the kids choose the cookie. We soon ran out of cookies they wanted to try and now they usually just request a cookie we have already made.
Mostly chocolate chips. Or cinnamon cookies.

To switch it up, I thought I would try granola bars. I've made them for three weeks in a row. However, I'm not going to lie.

The kids don't like them.

I assume they would eat them if they were starving. But they usually just let them sit.
I really like them. A whole, whole lot. And for those of you watching your gluten, they're gluten free.
2 cups rolled oats + 1/2 cup to grind :: 1/2 cup sliced almonds :: 1/2 cup chopped walnuts :: 1/2 cup sunflower seeds :: 3/4 cup dried berries (I like the orange flavored cranberries from trader joe's) :: 1 can condensed sweetened milk (I said gluten free, not fat free.)

Grind 1/2 cup oats in food processor. Mix all ingredients. Butter 8 x 8 baking dish and spread ingredients into prepared dish. Bake at 350˚ for 30 minutes until slightly browned. Cool completely. Cut into desired size squares. Will keep for about 1 week in airtight container.

Working on Aidez. Slow moving at first, but I'm now picking up a little speed.

The yarn did arrive on Friday. Oh, happy day! The hold up was that the color I ordered (palta 9181) was on back order. I changed my order to indigo (9165) and I couldn't be happy. Can't remember the last time I made an indigo sweater.

I'm using size 11 needles instead of the recommended 10.5. Simply because I frantically searched for my 10.5's and they never showed their pretty points.

I'll be back tomorrow with the four winners.

There was in impromptu visit from sisters and other family members.
Sweet treats were bought at the bakery. (Except for my chocolate chip cookies.)
The first day of school went off without a hitch. (Except for the fact that Andrew got lost, in his new school, at least 16 times.)

(Reminders that they were here made me smile.)

And I waited for my yarn to come. It never did.

So, I worked on this and find it extremely b o r i n g.

Fingers crossed that the UPS man delivers my yarn.

I think this was the fastest summer of all time. I just can't believe that we are headed into another school year. As my kids grow, time picks up speed. I always heard that would happen. It is so true. It is so hard to believe I will have a sophomore (yikes), an eighth grader and a sixth grader. How does that happen when I don't feel a day older? (No really, I don't.)

School starts for us on Wednesday. Our table will look like this for a couple of weeks. Constant reminders for the new school year.
"be a leader."

Trust yourself. Do the right thing.
"be yourself. everyone else is taken."

There is only one you. Shine on!
"pay attention."

Always be present. Focus on the now.
"if you think you can or can't you are right."

I think this is my personal favorite. The power of the mind and positive thinking.

Last week one morning, I sat outside finishing a baby hat. Debating if I was going to use a contrasting color for the trim and braids. I opted to just go with a solid. (I just happened to take a photo for my 365.)

Upon returning, after filling my coffee cup, this is what I found:

I have a couple of things to share with you. The first one you can pass along. The second one you must keep as a secret.

My sister, Lisa's, liquid sunshine recipe:

3 huge handfuls of kale :: 4 romaine leaves :: 3-4 stalks celery :: slice of ginger :: 1 whole peeled cucumber :: 1 pear. Add the cucumber last. It adds all the water. Sometimes she likes to add a kiwi for a little extra zing. Yummo!

The second one is that we wear lounge pants in public. (shhhhh.)

We don't always dress alike. Actually, don't ever dress alike is more like it. However, I made her, her very own linen lounge pants and told her she had to wear them for a photo, so I could show you. (You should have seen the kids faces. Sometimes it's just down right fun to embarrass them.)

So, make some lounge pants in a washable linen. Use the salvage edge as the bottom. It's all frayed and cool. And call it a pair of linen pants. Done. Finished. Easy peasy. Super comfy.

I have been knitting. Promise. Just slow going for some reason. (Um, hello summer.)

I really liked this pattern (Lace Motif Cardigan out of this book) and adore the finished sweater. Again, a little detail is just enough to keep it interesting. I made the size 6 months. The pattern called for 3 balls of Cascade 220 Superwash (where was that yummy yarn when my children were babies!) however, I only used 2 balls. Actually, less than 2. (Color 914A.)

Just wait till you see what I'm finishing up to go with it. (Not going to bed until I do.)

Please, don't let on that us knitters don't knit to save oodles of cash. (We all know how expensive knitting is. I still get those occasional, "Oh, you must save so much money knitting your own sweaters!" remarks. I just politely smile.) We should just keep that our little secret.

The Many Benefits of Clothing Construction

Embarking on the journey to learn how to knit clothing has many great benefits. Not only is it an antiquated craft with a rich tradition, but many aspects that made knitting popular throughout history are still applicable today. Developing the skills to knit or sew can be unbelievably advantageous to improving your life. These skills can save you money, ensure you have control of the materials from start to finish, and save quite a bit of money, not to mention leave you with a prideful feeling of accomplishment.

The kids and I traveled to Florida to spend the week with my parents. My sisters, niece and nephew and dog traveled, too.

Big plans to have one last "hoorah!" in my parents home.

My sisters and I had more breakdowns than we care to admit. And only by the strength of my mother did we get through them. (Like so many other times in our lives.) My mothers attitude amazes and inspires us all of the time.

She explained that they are ready for a new adventure.
A new spark in their lives.
We totally dig that.

Several times in my knitting life, I have been without my precious cable needle and had to improvise. I have used a paper clip, a bobbie pin and yesterday, a golf tee. It was a first... but it worked. Anything fun you've used?

I'm making a cute little sweater out of this book using that fantastic yarn.

I was a little intimidated to do the cutting, so Betsy did it.

My friend, Betsy, had saved all of her daughters t-shirts from all of her theater performances over the years, with hopes to one day do something with them.
That something ended up being a quilt.

The shirts were cut into 15" x 15" squares. (That really is a big job! Thank you, Betsy!) I then surged them together. Then, layered the batting, backing and top together. Sewed them together and then turned right sides out.
I didn't do a binding, just added a 4" border and stitched right along the edge. Used DMC Floss, making a little knot in each corner in order to keep the batting from bunching.
We used a whimsical fabric for the backing which we thought was fun.
And off sweet Caroline will go to college taking her memories with her.

Well, in true form, the beginning of summer has kicked my butt. This one even more so.

I have a bunch of projects lined up. Started painting the den yesterday. Going with all white walls. I am going to frame a bunch of my 365 photos in black and white (thanks Keana) and line the walls.
The built in's are getting a make over, too. I'll have to find a new home for those knitting books. I'm going to have some really large prints made up on the wrap around canvas and rest them in each section. No more "stuff" sitting on the shelves. Or maybe just a few little things.

I did finish my sewing project. (Yay, Betsy!)

Okay. This way of making salsa is new to me, so I just had to share.
The recipe was in the newest Everyday Food, June '11. Simple, fast and oh, so good. I've made it three times and each time used a different amount of tomatoes and onions. I think it is one of those recipes where you don't have to be specific on the amount of the ingredients and it will turn out great.
So, just put tomatoes (2-6 medium/large), a cut onion (or 1 1/2) 3 jalapeno peppers and 3-5 garlic cloves, unpeeled, on a baking sheet. Broil for about 6 minutes, rotate veggies and broil for another 6-8 minutes. (I take out the garlic after the first 6 minutes.) Remove from oven and let cool.
Remove the really charred bits (or not) and toss everything into the food processor or blender. (Except for the garlic skins and stems from the jalapenos. You may want to use less of the seeds from the jalapenos depending on how spicy you like it.) Stir in some chopped cilantro and juice from a lime. If you do not have a lime you can use about 2 TBLS white vinegar. (My friend, Kelsey, taught me that trick.)
Serve.

road trip

I packed up the car and headed to meet friends. A really dear friend from college and some other girls I hadn't met in person but felt like I knew in college.
The blanket made the trip. (Yeah, that's right. I started that in May of '08. That's three years ago, but who's counting.) I knit two rows.
A very special friend was having a very special birthday. She didn't know I was coming. I am smiling now just thinking about me walking into her home. (I did have a big fear that she might not know who in the world I was.)
This picture is so perfect to me. A bit blurry like the evening, like something that happened in a dream. I can't even find the words to describe how I felt. It was just downright awesome. Like each of them.
I also got to meet my college friends twins. I could honestly eat them.

It was one of those weekends. And I feel so blessed to have lived it.

I might feel a little like I am back in Jr. High, but I love it!

Worked bottom up, in the round. A little rib, a little color work, a little plain knitting in the round, color work, (twist, untwist), decrease, rib and voila. You've got yourself a sweater. (Okay, it really wasn't that fast.)
I must admit this looked like it was made for Libby when I finished it. (It was T I N Y !)

However, I didn't panic. (Tried not to.) I threw it (placed it gently) into the washing machine on its hand wash cycle, and then I blocked it (stretched it). That technique has worked for me every time.
I absolutely adore this fair isle pattern. Working on it was just enough to keep it interesting. Although, I just get a little bummed when I have to stop knitting to untwist the colors. And, I may have switched up some of the colors a bit. (Reading the colors, in that bright sun, on the beach, after a beer, may have gotten me a little confused.)

Pattern: Zara

Size: small, 36"

Yarn: Princess by Classic Elite 7 balls #3413 black, 1 ball #3428, 1 ball #3403, 1 ball #3416.

Needles: US 6 and 7

It's been really exciting around here... Libby got off her braces yesterday! Nothing but smiles and mirror checking. I am pretty sure she was smiling in her sleep when I went in for the final good night kiss last night.

I loved 60 Quick Knits, and I love 60 Quick Baby knits, too. I mean, 60 quick baby knits all out of cascade 220 superwash. How great is that!
There are so many darling patterns in this book, I can hardly stand it. I wish I would have photographed the little sheep pillow. Seriously adorable. There are dresses, sweaters, hats, mittens and blankets.
I always had a harder time finding baby boy patterns than girls. There are several cute ones in this book that I would have made my boys.

that green stuff

Spring break did not last that long. We've been home for a week and a day, and I JUST climbed out from all of my piles. We had some of the best weather we have ever had in Florida, and returned to some of the greenest grass we've ever seen.
I cut every last daffodil and brought them inside.

There was a cookie recipe I've had on the brain since Kim emailed me a recipe that Theresa shared with her.

a fine flock: feathered pistachio cookies:

The most time consuming thing was filling the bowl on the cuisnart. When removing the shell of the pistachio, one must put one nut in the bowl, the next one in your mouth. Collecting enough to grind takes some time.
I ended up with about 3/4 cup ground pistachio. The recipe is written in grams so I used this website to convert.
If you know anything about my cookie making, you would know that I am a huge fan of the slice and bakes. So, instead of using a cookie cutter (I blew the whole fine flock thing), I rolled it in a log, refrigerated for a couple of hours, cut and baked. They really are so easy and fast. Which means more time to knit.
I was a HUGE fan of these cookies. I mean, love, love, LOVE. The lemon zest along with the pistachio gives them a fabulous flavor. However, I have two boys that WILL NOT eat anything green in their cookies. Can you believe that! Crazy kids.

Kim also shared this super cool site. Love it. Above are the conversions I used.

i finally made a laptop carrier

This project has been in the back of my mind for some time. Almost two years, to be exact.
My beloved laptop has been carried around in a bulky carrier. One that came inside a bag I got on super sale at Staples. It was cumbersome and not so cute, really.

I honestly don't know what took me so long. Especially since this is a pretty quick project. (And, because I love my computer so much.) A project that can be made in an afternoon. Or an evening. Or a morning.

I purchased a walking foot a while ago which was very useful for this project since you are sewing through a lot of layers. The outside fabric was something I purchased from Leslie back when she had her goodness shop. (Oh, how I miss that shop.)

For the lining fabric, I used an old flannel swaddle blanket. Yep. All three kids were swaddled in that blanket starting with Charlie. Love that.

Can you see the tip of my thumb? I was trying on colors for my toes. It was down to purple or navy. After much thought and consideration (numerous texts to my sister) I went with the blue. It makes me so happy to look at my toes. I think it's true, yoga-ta get this blue!

Over. A whole book on knitting OVER the edge. The second collection of decorative borders by Nicky Epstein.
So many ideas for creative borders. I love how this book is divided into sections. And, all color coded for that section. It really is so pleasing to the eye.
Unique ribs.
All showcased in lovely red and orange and peach.
Cords.
This is probably my favorite section. Such cool cords! I think it would be so cute to make a hat and put a bunch of that cord fringe around it. Oh, except along the front. That might be annoying to have that fringe in your eyes. And, I love those circles.
Appliques.
I've never experimented much with appliques. But this section is so sweet. Heart appliques. Hugs and kisses, flowers, stars. There are so many fantastic ideas in this section. I envision baby girl sweaters with applique over the edge. (Um, yeah. I guess that's the idea.)
Colors.
If you have a fear of color. Fear no more. And there are charts for just about everything. Dogs, cats, hearts, flowers, bunnies, ribbons, butterflies, moons, suns, snowflakes, stars, ducks, fish, animal print!
Nouveau.
Yep. Totally new and different. This section has some really cool and funky borders. Endless possibilities.

Nigel. Nigel. Nigel.

My friend, Jennifer, is a flight attendant. Jennifer was working a flight from New York to Venice when her path crossed with Nigel. Nigel boarded the plane with a container full of sugar cookies. Sugar cookies that he baked. (How darn NICE is that!) Jennifer described them as one of the best cookies she has ever tasted. Nigel told her that he has won many awards with those cookies. (How lucky were those flight attendants?!) Nigel emailed Jennifer the recipe.

These are Nigel's Sugar Cookies and his words:
I use three cookie sheets when I bake these cookies. You will also need a glass, about 3" across and completely smooth on the bottom.

Preheat oven to 325˚ ( 350˚ in New Mexico for the elevation.)

Ingredients: (All at room temperature.)

1 stick sweet butter (same as unsalted) (1/2 cup)

1/2 cup granulated sugar

Mix together until very smooth and creamy. Then add:

1/2 cup vegetable oil (I use canola)

Mix together until very smooth and creamy. Then add:

1 large egg

Mix together until very smooth and creamy. Then add:

1/2 cup powdered sugar

Mix together until very smooth and creamy. Then add:

1 tsp vanilla

Mix together until very smooth and creamy.

Now, 1/2 cup all purpose flour in a separate bowl gets added to it:

1 teaspoon baking SODA

1/2 teaspoon cream of tarter

1/4 teaspoon salt

Mix together and then add to the butter mixture.

1/2 cup at a time, add another 2 cups of all purpose flour.

All mixed together nice and smooth? Good. {I loved that part. It was like Nigel was talking to me.}

Roll the dough into balls the size of a large grape. {Thinking mine were a bit larger than a large grape.}

I get 12 of these on a cookie sheet.

Here is the secret part: Take the glass and press it into the bowl of dough to put a film of oil on the bottom. Now take the glass and put it in a bowl of granulated sugar. The sugar will cling to the oil and leave a layer of granules on the bottom.

Now use the glass to squish the little balls of dough. This takes some practice. Sometimes each cookie takes two pressings with more sugar added each time.

Bake your first tray for 5 minutes. They are cooked when the edges show the slightest hint of even thinking about the merest possibility of turning brown.

If not cooked after 5 minutes add more cooking time in 30 second intervals.

One tray in the oven. One tray cooling. One tray being prepped. I get an average of 12 dozen cookies out of one batch.

Okay, so I made them. They really are unbelievable. They are thin (wondering if mine could have been even thinner, my glass had a bit of an arch) and crispy and you feel like you could eat a dozen. And of course, my kids LOVED them.

I did email Nigel to ask his permission to share his recipe. Nigel couldn't have been sweeter and funnier. He also did mention that he tweaks this recipe when he enters them in the state fair in order to meet requirements. The cookies have won blue ribbons 6 years in a row in New Mexico and another 2 in New York!

I heard Charlie wake Andrew at 6 am to tell him to hurry and get up, time to find the Easter baskets. Andrew didn't buy it. But, I almost did.

I just came in from a really cold walk with Trouble.
I see signs of spring. I hear signs of spring. I'm just looking forward to feeling signs of spring.
We still have snow in our forecasts.
While we're waiting, I'll just continue to buy flowers and Libby and I will draw signs of spring on our place mats.

Have you made some yet?
Back in December, I had a back injury which required a lot of resting of my back. I decided to keep casting on for toast. All knit out of Portland Tweed.
I ended up with about 7 pairs. I have 4 left. So, here's what I am thinking. I'm going to put 3 pairs (2 made out of 5004 tidal foam and 1 made out of 5003 gull grey) in the shop on Monday at around 12p.m. EST.
The fourth pair, the dark grey pair, ended up being a little shorter. I guess there was a bit of a yardage problem in that ball.
They still fit fine. And do the job of keeping you a little warmer.

I'd love to give this pair to the 13th commenter.

{Hmmm. Wondering if that will work.}

It was 60˚ today. Open the windows and let in the light! Phew. We needed a day like today.

The random generator first drew #67 which landed on my wonderful friend, Michelle. I laughed so hard. Michelle doesn't knit. Well, I take that back, she has learned to knit and worked on something we used to call her "kitty" scarf because it was really long and thin. Michelle enters these contests and then calls me wondering if she will win. She has a great eye and loves the fibers. She reads all of your comments and loves to talk about knitting and all of you. Michelle really loves this community just as much as I do. I feel very lucky to be part of all of it. Thank you.

Have you ever tried to spin? Well, I haven't. The whole thing intrigues and intimidates me all at the same time. Andrea's beautiful shop carries spinning kits, complete with very detailed directions and some really wonderful colors of wool roving. I do have a kit, just still a little intimidated to make some hand spun yarn. Studying these videos until I work up the nerve.

Would you like to give it a try? Well, Andrea would love to give away a kit to one of my readers. How nice!
I've been a little lax about showing our cookie of the week. Mostly because I keep repeating the same ones. However, last week and this week I made these. Crisp on the outside, chewy in the middle.
I doubled the cookie recipe and wrapped them for the week. One less thing to think about in the morning when you are packing lunches. Heck, if it were me, I'd just take the cookie and a water in my bag.
SO big they are hard to dunk, but that never stopped anyone.

I had one ball of Berroco Suede in this green floating around so decided to try the swayed pattern using one ball instead of the two balls I first used. I think it works. It is a little less bulky, a little quicker to knit and a little less expensive. (I saw this yarn on sale!)

For some reason, I'm thinking that my excitement about this sweater is not showing in these photos. (Note to self: stop placing hand firmly on hip in photos.) However, I am excited about this sweater. And super excited that it is finished. The pattern was interesting and the yarn some of my favorite, (I absolutely loved anticipating the change of color) but for some reason, I felt myself having a hard time working on this one. It may just have been some winter moods floating around.
I spoke about the construction. Working from right sleeve cuff to left sleeve cuff, adding the long ribbed collar and front panel last. Definitely a different construction and something different if you are used to knitting sweaters in pieces.

Yarn: 10 balls 7899 Cloudy Dawn Liberty Wool by Classic Elite (100% washable wool)

I treated Monday (President's Day) like the weekend. And Tuesday, too. Considering it was another snow day. Then all of a sudden, I couldn't put it down because I feared the worst knitters fear: I was short yarn. However, somehow (after stretching the bejeezus out of it) the collar fit around the right front, neck and left front. That little ball up there is all that is left of the ten balls. I have mixed feelings about that. It has had a bath and is currently blocking. Finally.

Casting on for something new.

The stomach flu is doing a little dance around here. I am really hoping it doesn't ask me to join along.

I've been working on the collar to elizabeth. Which seems like a very long, very boring, k1p1 scarf. It seems a little like torture. I am very opposed to knitting feeling like torture.

I've decided to knit on it as much as I can this weekend and then start something new. I like that plan.

Honestly, each one could have been the perfect name. I ended up having to consult with my friend, Michelle, who helped me narrow it down to a few. This is some of my favorite yarn:
I just love the texture of suede. Years ago, I was into making triangle wraps out of it and since then have been thinking about something else to use it for.
I had two balls left in my stash and decided on a cowl. Super easy and quick for a beginner or an advanced knitter.

Yarn: 2 balls Berroco Suede Needles: size 15

Cast on 40 stitches using the provisional cast on. Knit in garter stitch until piece measures 52" or until all yarn is used, ending with a RS row and leaving a 12" tail. Remove waste yarn from cast on edge and place live stitches on another needle. Using the kitchener stitch graft together both sets of live stitches to form loop. Weave in ends. Wear!
I'll write up an appropriate pattern and post it over in the sidebar and in ravelry. However, my mind is having a hard time thinking of a name. I'd love some help from your creative minds... please! I'll be sure to give you credit.

This is one of those projects that I couldn't be happier about finishing. I honestly don't know why it took me so long. (Probably because I am a little (a lot) intimidated about quilting.)
Remember me talking about the twelve square quilt?

{Twelve women make twelve quilts in a virtual quilting bee. Each month a different quilter mails out fabric to the other members of the quilting bee. Everyone makes a quilt square using that fabric and fabric from their stash, according to some specification, but also bringing their own unique voice to the square. The squares are mailed back to the originator and they have the makings for a full quilt!}

So, eleven others made my squares. The only thing I had to do was sew the squares together and finish it off. The months passed and finally I decided to implement Kristyn's 15 minute method. Fifteen minutes a day. Or, fifteen minutes every other day. Or, fifteen minutes a week. I'm pretty sure I did fifteen minutes a month. Because that is how long it took me. Months.

I backed it with a thrifted sheet. Machine stitched it together and hand stitched the binding. I stink at hand sewing... and I'm okay with that.

I am beyond thrilled to have this finished. And the squares that the eleven others made couldn't be more special to me. Eleven gorgeous squares, made from eleven talented women, stitched together to make one sweet quilt for my Libby.

Pretty darn Amazing.

I'd like to knit a huge amount of these. I thought about attaching a piece of grosgrain ribbon (or just a piece of yarn) while sewing it together and hanging from some twigs that I have in a vase. I think that would look really fun. Or, attaching them to Valentine's Day gifts. Or, filling with lavender and throwing into a drawer. Or, how about leaving the top open and filling it with little love notes!
But, for now I am just tossing them into a vase in the center of the table. I like this, too. They are meant to be felted. But to be quite honest, I am not even sure this yarn will felt. However, it is the perfect use for all those leftover little balls you have. (Suzanne!) This pattern accomplishes the shape of the heart by knitting short rows. I found a free pattern here that uses increases and decreases to do the same.
If you ordered the place mats (thank you!) remember to decorate them for yourself or for your sweeties. They are still available and if you order before February 7, you, too, can have them for Valentine's day.

I have sort of been on a hat kick. Easy to make. Easy to wear.
Simple Hat from Cables Untangled. I really love this hat. The cables are fun and everyone in the family can wear it. Yarn: Cascade 220 tweed. Color, 7612.
Tetsubou by Kristen Johnstone. I was lucky enough to win this pattern over on Kristen's blog. Love this hat and I adore the I-cord tie in the back. Yarn: Cascade 220 superwash.
Zig Zag beanie from Interweave knits, fall 2008. This was fun to make and the yarn I used was so soft and furry. ("Furry" injected by Andrew.)

My good friend, Michelle, is on her way over to help me clean out my closet. We do this a couple of times a year. Seriously, grab a friend, (a friend that can be brutally honest with you) a bottle of wine and try on those clothes! Donate the items you no longer need, wear or that just don't look that good on you. (This is where your lovely, honest friend comes in.)

So, we've had snow-days, half-days, delays and holidays. Resulting in an extra break from school and me drawn to the kitchen. Baking.
Okay, if you have tried making pop tarts, you know how delicious they are. Best eaten right from the oven. Or warmed later. With a big glass of milk. (I haven't had a glass of milk in years... coffee for me.)
Then I tried the sour cream orange cake (5th recipe down) from the Moosewood cookbook. Not too sweet and perfect with coffee. I almost omitted the glaze because I didn't have an orange liqueur and didn't want to buy a big bottle. However, they have those little bottles by the check out in my liquor store. Containing a perfect 3 TBLS just like the recipe suggested. I think that made the cake.
By the third batch of pop tarts, I feel like we discovered our favorite way to make them. I rolled them super thin. Seriously. Almost paper like. 3" x 4". Then, we put a B I G spoonful of the filling (Triple the recipe for the filling. You won't be sorry.) along one side and fold the piece in half. And then, after they cooled, drizzled brown sugar icing on top. Now THAT was the perfect little pop tart. Small, cinnamony and delicious.

{For the icing we melted 2 TBLS of butter and added 4 TBLS of milk and 1/3 cup of brown sugar. Mix well. Add 1 1/4 cup powdered sugar and 1/2 tsp of vanilla. Mix until smooth.}

I've been a little off my game over here. This morning, I ripped out the second sleeve of my Elizabeth sweater. I reversed the decreases, so the sleeve was pretty tight near the underarm. That just wouldn't do. And last week, I made hockey pucks. No, seriously. Hockey pucks.
I didn't really catch it with the first batch. I thought that I had just forgot to roll them in sugar. So, next batch, I rolled. Then I realized that wasn't the only problem. They were heavy. As in, really heavy. Checked out the recipe. Whoops... I used baking powder. Not baking soda. And it was a really big whoops. Cause I had doubled the recipe.
When you don't succeed, try, try again. And so I did. And they turned out exactly as they should. (It wasn't my first go around with these. We love them around here.)
Over the last few times I have made them, I decided I like them a little smaller. They pack up nicely to give to friends.
I did finish a little knit. Made for a special friend. I had this yarn in my stash for some time. I turned to one of my favorite books, Pipsqueaks. Over the years, I have made my children several sweaters out of this book. It really is a great one to add to your collection. You may even be able to find it in one of your used book stores. Speaking of used books... I recently stumbled upon the Moosewood Cookbook. Where have I been? And how did I ever live without it?

The snow is falling and this morning I stocked up on butter, flour and sugar.

Libby asked for a store bought hat (shudder!) and I get that. The whole teen thing... I guarantee she will come back around.
However, she said she would love if I made her flip-top mittens. Okay, then. I'll get right on that.

I modified the flip top mitten pattern from the 60 quick knits book. A simpler version with a 2 x 2 rib instead of the lace pattern and a shorter flip because she thought she would mostly wear them as mitts. She thought she would only need the "flip" if it got too cold at the bus stop.

I knit these in Cascade 220 superwash, #817.
To all my friends who knit, crochet, bake, sew, read, drink wine, sing, dance, drink coffee/tea, take photos, stop by my little space here and to those who bought my place mats...

this Christmas

So, this Christmas, I didn't get 1/2 of what I wanted accomplished. Most of the decorations stayed in their boxes. The advent didn't get started until about the 15th of the month. And, the knitting wasn't finished.

However, the fondue maker was finally used.

And, Santa did stop by to tell my kids they better get to sleep or he wasn't coming back.

a cookie of the week

Finally. Finally there was something other than chocolate chip cookies around here.
I don't know why, but there hasn't been anything else baked around here for a pretty long time. But this week (and last) we had the vanilla sugar cookies, again. However, for some reason, I just couldn't add the vegetable oil. Since I am a big dough eater, I just pictured myself drinking vegetable oil. Sort of gave me a stomach ache. So, I used 2 sticks of butter instead. Cause eating sticks of butter seems to be so much better. (ahem.)
You know I am a huge fan of the "slice and bake". I wish I would have had some red or green sugar crystals to roll it in instead of the raw sugar. Nonpareils would be cute. Next time.
The cup of butter definitely gave these cookies a more buttery flavor. Seemed to be a good fit for everyone around here.

I use my place mats for everything. Even jotting down recipes. You still have time to get yours before Christmas. I'm thinking for a guarantee Christmas delivery, Friday will be safe, for sure. water bottle covers

It wasn't something that I had a burning desire to knit. I mean, I knew I would one day make one, I just didn't know when. Well, why in the world did I wait so long? You don't even have to have an ache or pain to fall in love with these things. It's like a little security blanket, tucked under your arm to keep you warm.
There are a bunch of patterns out there, but I really like this one. Like a little sweater for your water bottle. The pocket can be omitted. It looked cute without it, too. I used the two balls I had left over from this project and size 7 needles. Still looking plum to me. (Also, I don't know if it was just me, but I had too few stitches with the 77 to do the final decrease. I changed the K35 to K34 and the K34 to K33. ) I'm thinking there are several people that would love one of these under their tree. Oh! I ordered my first water bottle from target, but they seem to be out of stock. Our local drug store carries them.

My small size 7 circulars were not short enough to join the 44 stitches. I looked high and low for my double points. Tore the house apart, actually. In an effort to avoid purchasing more needles, I decided it was time to try the magic loop method again. Wasn't a fan the first time I tried it, but this time? This time I was sold. Using Cascade 220 Superwash.

Oh, and the double points? Saw them sitting plain as day on the book shelves, holding a pair of toast. Oy.

We've been customizing our table, almost on a daily basis. If you bought the chalkboard place mats (thank you!) just thought I would give a little tip. Turn your chalk on its side. It makes great, soft shapes. Swirls, too. Works really well with broken pieces... and is fun, too! Go ahead, use your imagination and customize away.

I love an interesting construction, and Elizabeth definitely offers that. Knit in one piece that only requires sewing together along the sleeve and side seems. Adding a rib collar and front panels (that I foresee taking me some time to complete) to finish the sweater off.

The self striping yarn works so well for this pattern, resulting in vertical stripes along the front and the back. Love that.

That was the card delivered with some flowers, from my mother in law, to Libby.

My mother in law was disappointed that she didn't give Libby a flower after her violin concert. So, the next day, she called the local florist and ordered some flowers... asking for them to write on the card "owed you one". Libby was a bit confused when she opened the card. Then we read it out loud and had a big chuckle.

(my turkey's are getting SO big!)

I took this photo on Thanksgiving Day but never made it over here. I really did want to tell you how thankful I am for you visiting this little space. All the kind words you offer all year long are very much appreciated. Also, thanks so much for supporting my little shop. The elves (aka my parents) and I worked in the warehouse to box the chalkboard place mats which are on the way to homes as we speak. Thank you!
I haven't been "a friend to crochet with", yet, however, this book could change that. Pages upon pages filled with crochet inspiration.
There are four chapters that focus on crocheted fabrics, motifs, grannies, and flowers. All detailed to perfection, by Sasha Kagan.
It all looks so unbelievably gorgeous to me.

the chalkboard place mats

Do you remember the chalkboard place mats I told you about back in the spring? I told you how we made them and how you, too, can make some. Well, I got such great feedback and inspired some of you. I love that.

Well, you inspired me, too.

I knew I couldn't make them for others, (they are just too darn time consuming) but I thought maybe I could find someone to manufacture them (in the USA) for me. And you. And save everyone some time. So, over the past months, I have been working on this little project. With the help of a friend, found all the right people and an AWESOME product.

I truly can't say enough about these. They are thick and durable and oh, so, smooth, the chalk just glides. Speaking of the chalk, it is like it is magic. For some reason, it produces very little chalk dust. Gotta love that. They wipe clean with a damp cloth and look like new when they dry. They have bull nose edges, so they are careful on the hands. They are safe on your tabletop and will inspire all those in your family.

Have your little ones set the table and have fun while doing it. They can write the names and choose where everyone sits. They can practice spelling words and math problems. They can play tic tac toe and hangman. You can leave notes to others and yourself. You can draw yourself a pretty picture and smile at it all day long. You, and they, will use your imagination to come up with new uses. Trust me, there are plenty!

I opened a little shop so you, too, can have some in your home. They are sold in sets of four and include one box of crayola® colored chalk.

Andrew is eleven. I'm not going to mention how hard it is to believe that, but it is.
Eleven balloons, chocolate croissants for breakfast, (Trader Joes. My friend Betsy turned me on to them... they are so good. Frozen, four in a box, check them out.) a ride to school and yellow smiley face cookies for the class.
Friends over, pizza and cupcakes.

It's good to be eleven.

Oh, hey. I just wanted to let you know I realize you can't get the Libby pattern, the chunky knit beanie pattern or the package pillow pattern from the sidebar. I don't know what in the heck happened to them, but do know that I am working on it. Please give me a few days and then you should be able to access them. Sorry about that.

Thirteen balloons. Cinnamon Rolls for breakfast, a big hershey bar in her lunch box and her favorite soup in bread bowls for dinner, again.
A vanilla cake with purple buttercream icing. (Quite possibly the ugliest cake I ever made.) She loved every bit of it.

Thirteen beautiful years with a little girl that inspires me every single day.

It's one of those. A sweater that can be worn over and over and over. Doncha' think? I have always wanted to knit something like this but could never find the right combination of yarn and pattern. And since I am a girl that (usually) uses what the pattern calls for, I had a hard time finding that. The moment I saw this sweater and felt leche, I was sold.
This is what I worked on while on my trip. Stockinette pieces with a cable yolk. Just enough simplicity with a little detail to keep it interesting. Not too bulky, great for traveling. If you haven't attempted cables in a sweater before, this may be the project for you. Just a small section, perfect.

Pattern: Jenny Watson, Queensland Collection, book eleven, design twenty

Yarn: Queensland Leche Shade #9 brown (but all I see is PLUM!)

Needles: 1 pair US6 and US8

Size: 32"-34" actual 36"

Modifications: none.

This pattern can be made for a little girl, too. You better believe Libby would have had one.

L O V E this hat.

You know it's a good one when a couple of twelve year olds walk by you and say, "Cool hat, Mrs. Friend".

The pattern was fun, easy and a pretty quick knit. Nichole knit a couple of super cute variations. The possibilities are endless, really. It uses Classic Elite's Fresco. My first time working with this yarn which was super soft. I ordered the yarn from Sarah at Knot Another Hat. (I have told you how fast she gets her yarn to you, haven't I?) It may seem a little pricey, but you will have enough yarn to make three hats. So, there you go. You'll have three gifts or three new hats for yourself or one for yourself and two for your friends or special someone or kids or...
